Fiber Study

Washing the raw wool.
We are investigating clothing and what it is made of. Through this inquiry study we are exploring the different materials and fibers that are used to construct what we wear. So far we've been able to examine wool from sheep here in Vermont, quiviut from musk ox in Alaska. Through washing, drying, spinning and observing wool the students are using their senses to construct an understanding of the fiber's properties. The student will be designing their own experiments to test the strength and water absorption of the materials in coming weeks.

Along with looking at the different kinds of fibers, we are exploring the different ways of producing material for clothing such as knitting and weaving, and analyzed why different processes are better for different purposes.

We've also started to explore other materials clothing is made from, sometimes the source is unexpected. Here are two short videos we've watched that explore making garments in historical ways such as Fair Isle sweaters and new innovative ways such as using rubber from trees to make wetsuits.
